Service Models
In Ohio, Adult Day Service (ADS) centers operate under two primary models as defined by the Ohio Administrative Code: the Enhanced Model and the Intensive Model. These models outline the scope of services provided to participants. Some ADS centers operate a more social model which emphasizes social activities, community outings, and exercise.
Enhanced Model
This model includes structured activity programming, health assessments, supervision of all Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), hands-on assistance with one or more ADLs (excluding bathing), hands-on assistance with medication administration, comprehensive therapeutic activities, intermittent health status monitoring, and hands-on assistance with personal hygiene.
However, it does not encompass social work services, skilled nursing services, or rehabilitative services.
Intensive Model
Building upon the Enhanced Model, the Intensive Model offers additional services such as regular health status monitoring with intervention, social work services, skilled nursing services, and rehabilitative and restorative services.
It also includes hands-on assistance with a minimum of two ADLs, including bathing.
When evaluating an ADS center, it’s important to understand which model they follow to ensure the services align with the participant’s specific needs. Discussing these models with the center’s staff can provide clarity on the level of care and support available.
Specialized Services
ADS centers may offer access to visiting specialists who provide valuable on-site services for participants. Ask if the center hosts professionals such as podiatrists, beauticians, physical therapists, audiologists (for hearing health), or even dental and vision care providers. These services can enhance convenience by addressing health and personal care needs in one location, reducing the need for additional appointments outside the center. Understanding the availability of such services can help caregivers and participants decide if the center meets all of their needs.
